Rain Garden & Bioretention Areas
Ulster County Department of the Environment
Kingston, NY
Combined sewer overflows or CSO’s create water quality problems for rivers in older cities. Restaino Design assisted Ulster Co. DOE in developing this rain garden and subsequently designed bioretention areas and a PICP walk at the edge of the adjoining county parking lot. Both projects enhance urban spaces while addressing stormwater issues. The rain garden provides color and interest visible to the street; the bioretention areas soften an existing asphalt parking area and the PICP walk adds access. All infiltrate stormwater, are demonstration projects showcasing green infrastructure and are educational in nature.
